While enjoying my avocado toast during brunch the other day, a friend asked for advice on what to buy on the “cheap” for her new apartment. Not going to lie here – I hate the word ‘cheap’, especially when talking about home improvements, renovations, furniture……………etc.
If your budget is ‘bijou’ you’re looking for cost effective solutions – not cheap ones!
What does that mean? Well…..if you’re looking for a TV media stand but the only thing that is the right price, size and colour is a bedroom dresser. Buy the dresser! It offers storage. It’s multipurpose. You might have to spend $20.00 for new handles. It can be converted back to a bedroom dresser in the future.
Don’t reach for your wallet just yet. Keep reading.
1 | THE DESIGN CONCEPT
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I am big believer in working with a design concept. I refer to it as your road map to success.
It creates an overall vision of what you want your space to look like.
Helps you put together a ‘spend’ budget
It keeps you focused on the next purchase.
Finally, it keeps you on track
2 | DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU
Your Pinterest and Instagram accounts are chock-full of drool worthy low platform beds. You want one! Yet, you’ve been sleeping on a regular mattress with a box spring and a bed frame with 6” legs. Next steps? Research.
Similarly, you’re loving those casual bar stool island kitchen images. Unfortunately, you have a hard time keeping you back straight unless sitting on a regular chair. Be true to you, otherwise, you’re eating dinner on the floor with the couch as back support.
3 | HOW MUCH TO SPEND
Donations and collections from the street curb are always free. Otherwise, you will need to spend some money. How much? Entirely up to you. It all depends on your priorities and decorating style. If you like quality and longevity, you may opt for the necessities immediately and add as funds become available.
4 | PLAYING THE HIGH vs LOW GAME
Unlimited interior design budgets are fun. Who doesn’t love those?
Unfortunately, 99.9% of the time, we’re all working with a limited budget. And, it needs to stretch further than you could imagine. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It forces you to get creative, think outside the box and weight the needs and wants more objectively.
With a little soul searching you will figure out what is splurge worthy, what you can downgrade, and what you can live without or wait for.
5 | WHOSE HOME IS IT ANYWAY?
When furnishing your home with your own money there is only one opinion counts – YOURS. Be kind and gentle with yourself. Furnishing a home can be a harrowing experience. Additional stress and guilt serve no purpose. This includes friends and family hounding you for your choices.
If you choose to work with a decorating professional, let them help you. Don’t micromanage the process. They really are there to help you. If, on the other hand, you opt to go at it on your own, do what’s right for you.
Your home is such a personal space. It should be a reflection of you.
As always, we’re here to help. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about this blog or to add a comment. Alternatively, if you are ready to talk about your upcoming decorating project, we’d love to hear from you.
